Target : to establish a "Regional Clearinghouse"
The
uncontrolled proliferation and illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons
is a serious problem in SEE, affecting all countries of the region. It hampers
economic and social development, fuels crime and insecurity and undermines post-conflict
peace building.
Where do we stand now ?
On
8 May 2002, a Regional Clearinghouse for Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC)
was opened in Belgrade in co-operation with UNDP. A team of experts provides advice
and direction to the countries of the region on how to control and stop proliferation
through concrete actions.
Example: the Clearinghouse is planning the destruction
of 4500 AK-47 rifles in Bulgaria. Similar actions will be carried out in Croatia,
Albania, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and the former Yugoslav Republic
of Macedonia.
