Sava Basin Task Force
The great political and economic changes that have taken place in the four countries of Sava basin ( Bosnia Herzegovina, Republic of Croatia, Republic of Slovenia and Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ) after the split of former Yugoslavia has called the attention of Stability Pact for promoting a coordinated effort for defining, promoting and organising the best usage of Sava Basin water and related resources having as a first priority the re-establishment and development of navigation on Sava river and its main tributaries Drina and Una. This Stability Pact initiative is a project aiming to establish and develop an internationally recognized partnership among the four countries of the Sava Basin based on the models set up for other international rivers: the International Sava Basin Commission.

By signing on November 28, 2001 in Sarajevo the attached Letter of Intent, the four riparian countries of the Sava Basin have committed themselves :
  • to define and establish by summer 2002 the proper institutional framework ( Treaty) based on the models set up for other international rivers which, once ratified by the signatory country (fall 2002), will establish the International Sava Basin Commission;
  • to devise and start up the implementation by fall 2002 of first International Sava Basin Commission Short and Medium Term Master Plan aiming to:
    • rehabilitate and develop the navigation of Sava basin and its main tributaries Drina and Una,
    • secure the sustainable development, utilization, preservation and management of Sava Basin water and related resources,
    • preserve and protect the environment, biodiversity and aquatic condition of Sava Basin,
    • promote the social and economic welfare of Sava basin riparian State and Communities and the well-being of all Sava basin riparian people.
