The leaders and experts of the representative trade union organization from South Eastern Europe participating in the Conference express their deep concern over the possible negative impact of the current critical stage of adjustment of the EU on the commitments taken with the Thessaloniki Declaration and the need to intensify the Stabilization and Association process in the region.
Recognizing the depth and seriousness of the challenges facing the EU at the moment, we believe that the EU will not allow their solutions to lead to undermining the achievements of the region of SEE in the last years through “slowing down” the process of EU integration. Such an approach will be of little help for the EU but can trigger a destabilizing ripple effect across the region. In the longer term perspective It probably can turn the more costly option of development for all sides involved.
The reforms process in the countries of SEE has entered a crucial stage, laying the basis to long lasting solutions, sustainability of the development of the countries and unprecedented level of regional cooperation. Within this process, the prospects of EU accession are both a pillar of stability and the major source of dynamics and motivation for change. The way forward necessitates to enhance and intensify this process to develop a sound social dimension, based on the European Social Model and aligning IFI’s policies along that line. Within such a perspective SEE societies and trade unions in particular will be able to make their contribution and take responsibility for a common European future.
