The Belgrade-based South East Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC) is collaborating with the Serbian Ministry of the Interior in their fifteen-day amnesty initiative for the reduction of illegal weapons possession in Serbia. This was announced at the end of March 2003 and it is projected to last until 9 April. 2.3 million copies of a SEESAC-funded information leaflet will be distributed to households throughout the country. SEESAC is also co-ordinating and assisting appropriate NGO public awareness-raising activities in support of this Government initiative.
A joint project of UNDP and the Stability Pact, SEESAC was launched in May 2002 and is assisting Southeast European Countries in developing programs for reducing illicit SALW proliferation. Active throughout the Southeast European region, SEESAC has provided assistance or support for the collection and destruction of a significant number of weapons under the auspices of the Stability Pact framework.
