Central European members of the Stability Pact have much to offer the countries of South Eastern Europe. Still facing the challenges that economic reform and impending EU membership entail, the Central Europeans are uniquely placed to identify relevant and realistic solutions for the nations of SEE. Moreover, they are in a position to do it in a more cost effective manner.
One of the obligations for EU membership that the Central European countries face is the development of a foreign assistance program. Most CE countries have already started down this path, with a particular emphasis on helping SE Europe. EU institutions, mainly the Commission, along with certain Member States have indicated a willingness to help develop these programs further. However, there is additional gain to be realized by sharing experiences and formulating a more concentrated focus on the SE Europe’s regional requirements.
The Stability Pact Special Co-ordinator Erhard Busek, in partnership with the Austrian Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner, will convene a conference in Vienna on 5 May to allow Central European countries and major international donors to share their respective experiences and explore opportunities for greater collaboration. The meeting will also explore the potential of “triangular” assistance, where international donors support CE activities in the region.
