Stabilising the Electricity Sector in South East Europe through the Establishment of a Regional Electricity Market and its Integration into the Internal Electricity Market of the European Union
Improving the stability of electricity supply for the countries of the region is fundamental for economic development and political stability.
The creation of a regional electricity market (South East Europe Electricity Regulatory Forum) is setting the terrain for the medium to long-term catching-up of the region’s electricity sectors to the standards of the European Union (EU). This initiative is led jointly by the Stability Pact (Working Table II) and the European Commission.
The new approach will be officially approved at the 15 November Ministerial meeting in Athens where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed by the energy ministers of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece and Romania, as well as by the EC and the Stability Pact.
The attached background paper gives you a roadmap, a timeline and an outline of what is needed to create a regional electricity market for Southeastern Europe.
