Hombach Hails Regional Implementation Plan on Small Arms and Light Weapons Proliferation

The Special Co-ordinator of the Stability Pact, speaking to the Stability Pact Working Table on Security at its Budapest meeting on 28 November, spotlighted the launch of the Stability Pact Regional Implementation Plan on Combating the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons at the semi-annual meeting of the Working Table on Security. He felt the Implementation Plan was the logical next step in tackling the fundamental security questions facing South East Europe. The Plan, which seeks to provide assistance to South East Europe nations in formulating and executing projects to collect and destroy weapons as well as create the optimum institutional capacity to confront illicit arms flows within the region, was approved by the Stability Pact Working Table on Security at its Budapest meeting on 28 November. In his remarks to the meeting, Hombach said “I am happy to see the Working Table espoused the Implementation Plan as a key contribution to local perceptions of an improving security environment. The plan stresses the importance of practical approaches and seeks to implement and apply a common body of knowledge of solutions.” Hombach also noted the importance of controlling Small Arms and Light Weapons to the important Working Table goal of Security Sector Reform.
