Hombach Hails Orderly and Peaceful Kosovo Elections

The Special Co-ordinator of the Stability Pact congratulated Kosovo for the peaceful elections held on 17 November, which showed the population's democratic maturity. Hombach also lauded the important role of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo with Ambassador Daan Everts at its head, which organised for the second time, in just over one year, an election that was not only equivalent to European standards, but also managed to achieve very inclusive results with regard to the participation of ethnic minorities. Such constituent elements are crucial for democratic development and are a necessary basis for embedding the democratic process as means of sorting out political differences. The prospects of Kosovo-wide democratic political institution prompted Hombach to reiterate his invitation to the new Government as well as UNMIK to integrate more closely within the working structures of the Stability Pact. This will permit Kosovo to participate more fully in the ongoing consolidation and enhancement of Southeast European regional and cross-border co-operation, which has emerged over the last two years. The dimension of good neighbourly relations and cross-border co-operation on tackling of everyday issues is at the core of the very European integration process Kosovo wants to be part of. An open Kosovo economy and an open attitude on the side of Kosovar politicians to overcome differences through dialogue with all neighbours are essential prerequisites for any further integration in the wider Southeastern European region.
