In an article in the International Herald Tribune to be published on Saturday 23 September, Bodo Hombach calls on the EU, G8 and others to hear the voice of the democratic majority in Serbia and take them as partners in planning a better future for Serbia in Europe. Nothing will be the same after Sunday’s elections in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, according to Bodo Hombach, Special Co-ordinator of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, in an article to be published in the International Herald Tribune on Saturday 23 September. Whatever falsification of the election result Slobodan Milosevic tries, the most reliable polls show the opposition up to 20 percentage points ahead, and it is clear that the democratic majority in Serbia wants to join the European mainstream. That majority does not believe – and who would? – that Milosevic and his profiteering cronies will deliver that, says Bodo Hombach.Serbia has been left behind, Bodo Hombach points out. Many of its neighbours are negotiating for membership in, or association to, the EU. Serbia is isolated. But the isolation which Milosevic has brought upon his country must not be permitted to help him hang onto the lest shreds of power. Bodo Hombach calls on the international community to intensify contacts with, and help to, the democratic forces in Serbia – the independent towns, free media etc – and take as partners in planning a better future for Serbia those who clearly have the real democratic mandate. The EU offers full integration into its structures to all south eastern European participating countries: this would apply also to a democratic Serbia. The Serbian people must use their vote. The EU, G8 and others must hear their voice.
